Okay, here’s the story. My friend has a Pavilion 590-p0085z that is about 3 years old. A few months ago, he started having a problem with the computer freezing after a certain amount of idle time. The only way to get it back is with a hard reboot. The computer has all outstanding HP & MS updates applied. I ran thorough hardware diagnostics on it multiple times and it passes all tests each time. I also tried running the PC with NOTHING connected to it (just the monitor and a basic wired keyboard & mouse), but the problem keeps reoccurring. The last thing I tried was a system recovery, but it still keeps freezing DURING the recovery. The PC has 2 drives, a SSD boot drive and a secondary HDD drive for personal data storage. When I tried the recovery, I only had it clean the Windows drive thinking the 2nd drive should have no effect since it only contains personal data. I am now at the point where I can’t boot the PC at all since the recovery attempt never completes. What else can I do/check? If any other information is needed, I will gladly supply it. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi @GTifeld
This PC has the Sunflower MB, SSID 8433. This MB is probably running BIOS version F.57.
HP has issued a new BIOS update (F.58) to fix this problem for some PCs using the Sunflower, SSID 8433 MB.
But I don't see a newer BIOS update at this PC's Download Site. The only BIOS update for this PC is F.41. The F.41 BIOS update may not or will not install because it is an older version.
The PC is in trouble now. Try installing the HP F.58 BIOS update for the identical Sunflower MB, SSID 8433 at this Site to see what happens. The F.58 BIOS update: should install with zero problems and should also fix the PC.
You will have to use the procedure at this Forum Link to update the BIOS if you cannot load the OS. Or check this Site for details on how to create a bootable USB BIOS update drive. HP may not provide support for this option. This means you will have to use the Aptio V AMI Firmware Update Utility from https://www.ami.com/bios-uefi-utilities/
Run the F.58 BIOS update on a different PC. Select the second option in the following image, if available.
Boot to the USB drive, if you can create this drive on a different PC, on this PC to update the BIOS.
Disconnect the data drive before doing a OS recovery so you don't install the OS system on the data drive.
