Not sure if this is a hardware of software issue. Whenever I plug my APC UPS/battery backup cable into the PC's USB port, the computer does not the turn off the screen and go to sleep as per power management settings. It took me a while to figure this one out. When I unplug the UPS cable, the computer screen turns off and the unit sleeps as configured. So it's 100% caused by the USB port.

For clarity, the cable I'm talking about allows the PC to communicate with the UPS to monitor voltage and manage shutdown in the event of a power failure. On the desktop, I run APCs PowerChute software. I have tried changing various power management advanced settings but it makes no difference.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? I do want the keep monitoring the UPS and do want my computer to sleep.

@BuffaloSoldier

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the PC Won't Sleep with APC UPS Cable Plugged into the USB Port,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you try with an alternate USB cable to check if there's any difference?

Have you updated the drivers for the USB device?

When was the last time it worked without these issues? or has it always been the same since you got the UPS connected?

Also, Did you contact the UPS manufacturers?

While you respond to that, please update the BIOS, chipset drivers (Click here) and the drivers for the UPS (if any, contact the manufacturer of the UPS).

Eagerly awaiting your response for further assistance,

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner.

Hi Buffalo

I have an APC backup UPS running PowerChute.

It is not a hardware problem.

I suggest uninstalling PowerChute software. Make sure you have current version of PowerChute software before you reinstall this software.

Disconnect USB connection to UPS before installing PowerChute.

Install current PowerChute software. Connect USB when prompted by the PowerChute installer.

I have never had the problem you are having. My PC is protected and sleep functions work on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Grzy

This issue went away when I purchased a new APC UPS.
