I updated BIOS, but not CMOS battery. I'll try that when I get a chance. Thanks for the suggestion. But drives me crazy that so often tech manufacturers sell lemons... spend almost as much time troubleshooting as using devices it seems.

Thank you for following up with the solution you've found to your original issue. I just went through the exact same situation but had no clue a failed CMOS battery would have such seemingly unrelated side effects.

 

Replaced the battery and every single issue went away including the constantly rebooting when trying to shutdown or sleep and also my network adapter disapparing. 

 

This solution saved my ass. Kudos to you my friend. Really. Thank you very much for posting this.

 

It's also worth mentioning that the machine I was working on was  dc7800p sff.
