dc5800
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

As I was reading an article on my browser (using Win7-x64 on a HP/Compaq DC5800), I got a BSOD with MEMORY_MANAGEMENT code. The system immediately shut down. Since then, when I press the start button, the screen remains black, and I hear sets of five beeps (about 4-5 sets). Then the beeps stop, but a red led flashes 5 times, pauses and then flashes 5 times, for ever. Also all fans turn to full speed and stay on until I power down.

Please advise, I'm left without a PC and it hurts both my work and leisure life...

Hi:

See the troubleshooting guide below, appendix A, page 58 for how to troubleshoot the 5 beep code.

Most likely one of the memory modules is no good and needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the swift reply.

I'll try to find the guilty DIMM.

Do you by any chance know if this model can take 4GB memory modules? Single or in pairs? The specs indicate that it can't, but sometimes this is merely because such modules were not available when the particular PC was launched.

Thanks again!

You're very welcome.

No, that model can only take 2 GB DIMMS.

I bought these for my dc7800 which is the upscale model of yours.

OK. Assuming only one DIMM is to blame, do you think I'll be forced to buy a pair? Or can I just buy a single one, making sure I get one with the the proper frequency setting?

I promise this is the last question 🙂
