Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hey everyone,

I purchased a set of HP recovery discs a week ago and when I try to install them I get this message during recovery.

Component: Windows 10 Preinstall Diagnostic Tools - TDC

Timing: FactoryUpdate

Error: Incorrect brand name

Next Step: Please check Notebook model or feature byte

I have run a full HDD diagnostic from the bios however I can't get past this error which happens during the recovery stage and I get a message on screen saying the recovery has failed.

If you purchased from HP, contact HP, to rectify the problem.

If you purchased from some other vendor, contact that vendor.

Hi, @Commodore22

If you need to reinstall W10, you can do that for free at any time by using the Media Creation Tool at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can create a USB installation flash drive.  You will need an 8 GB flash drive for this.

W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Then you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

I have done that and it successfully installed and works fine however I wanted to use the recovery disc to set the computer to how it was when I bought it and since I paid £41 for the recovery media I'd like to actually use it since I have paid the money for it.

I couldn't find anything on the support page for the error I am getting could I have been sent the wrong discs? I bought them directly from HP.

1. Good.

2. Doing so would install extra HP software, not just Windows.

3. That makes sense.

4. Hmm.

5. Yes.

6. Scroll down-and-left on this page, then click the "Contact HP" hyperlink.

Hey everyone,

I still am no closer to getting this resolved and I have since been sent a 2nd set of recovery discs from HP which give me the same error and the discs were double checked this time that they are the correct ones.

Any ideas?

I doubt that the "installer" is verifying anything about the manufacturer or model-number of the disk-drive, since that is a "customer-replaceable-unit", e.g., SSD replacing a HDD.

[If your automobile will not start, don't check the tire-pressure.  Instead, check the gasoline tank & the battery & the fuel-injection pump.]

So, I presume that it is checking some bytes of identification that is embedded into the motherboard.

Enter BIOS SETUP, and look at what is displayed in the "General" (or "Details") page for those bytes of "feature" or "model" information.  Tell us what you see.

Obviously, HP is giving you software that they want to install ONLY on the "correct" hardware, not on some "other" computer, and they are trying to "enforce" their "want".  But, something is not matching-up, and so you get the error-message.
