Hi:

What is the full model number or product number of your PC?

Use this guide to find that information...

Hi:

The product specs state it came with W8.1 64 bit.

Do you need to reinstall W8.1, or did you take the free upgrade to W10?

It works differently depending on what OS you need to reinstall.

HP Recommended

I did the free upgrade to Win 10

Here is how you can reinstall W10 for free...

Make a bootable W10 installation flash drive using the Media Creation Tool at the link below.

Select the 64 bit option.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

Can I save the download directly to the new hard drive?  I have a connector that I can use with my laptop that connects it to my USB, so it thinks it is another drive.

Hi:

Download the tool on your laptop, run the tool,  plug the flash drive into the laptop and create the W10 installation media that way.

Got it and thanks.  I will let you know how it goes.
