HP Pavilion 23-p027c
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I updated the bios on my HP Pavilion 23-p027c from 80.09 Rev.A to 80.20 Rev.A because the video drivers would contiune to crash.

Now after upgrading the bios I cannot get the PC to load any hard drives in the PC.

The PC sees the drives USB, DVD, internal hard drive, but when I try to load any drive it crashes "HP" logo only and does nothing else.

I cannot reinstall OS because it will not load the USB, or DVD drive and it will not load system recovery.

Trying to roll back Bios (using extracted file sp66750.exe) and trying to roll back to  LAV_8009.BIN or ME9_1482.BIN results in Bios failure to val...

Hi

Turn off the notebook.
Plug the notebook into a power source using the power adapter.
With the notebook off, press and hold the Windows logo key and the B key at the same time (WinKey +B).

NB: On some notebook models, it might be necessary to press and hold the Windows logo key and the V key (WinKey +V).

While pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2 to 3 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows logo key and the B or V key until the HP BIOS update screen displays or you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps).

This is a n All-in-One PC.

Win key  "B" does nothing blank screen, no beeps.

Win key "V" just boots to "HP" logo.

PC will boot to automatic repair but then all activity stops at automatic repair.

I find no jumpers on motherboard to reset Bios just Cmos jumpers.

I have swapped out the hard drive, memory, and removed the WI-FI card.

From: HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B0D/2B21)

Fixes:

- Updates the microcode for Intel processor security enhancement.

** After this BIOS update has been installed, previous BIOS versions cannot be reinstalled.

Seemingly, this update (Mar 12, 2018) contains the "enhancement(s)" necessary due to the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities.

Enter BIOS SETUP, and check the "legacy/non-legacy" setting is correct, and that your disk-drive is listed as an "eligible" bootable source.

I set legacy to enabled, still nothing.

I can point DVD to boot Win disk, "Press any key to Boot from DVD" comes up, and the DVD spins for about a minute then spins down and nothing.

It is as thougth the hard drive controller has failed. No DVD, hard drive, no USB even thought bios sees all three of them.

Again this happened after Bios update.

Did you try the other option, i.e., enabling "secure boot" ?

> I can point DVD to boot Win disk, "Press any key to Boot from DVD" comes up,

That is a sign that your computer has booted from the DVD,

and a sign that the booted system has found a valid boot-record on the disk-drive.

If it did not find a boot-record on the disk-drive, it would not display that prompt -- it would continue loading from the DVD.

> The DVD spins for about a minute then spins down and nothing.

That message gives you a choice to continue booting from the DVD, by pressing the "any" key, or to "do nothing", to boot from the disk-drive.

Did you press that "any" key, to choose to continue booting from the DVD?

> Again this happened after Bios update.

Maybe, the BIOS-update changed some settings in the BIOS.

You may need to "revert" those settings to "last-known-good-boot" values.

Got any other "bootable" CD/DVD disks, such as one creatable via: www.memtest.org or an UBUNTU distribution?

Will your computer boot from either of these sources?

Installed another working hard drive. Just to be sure it is not the hard drive.

Downloaded Ubuntu 18.04 used LiLi USB creator ( the one I have been using for years) to create USB.

When I try  "Try Ubuntu" I get a blank screen. When I try "Install Ubuntu" I get  a blank screen.

When I try the Win 8.1 ISO DVD it loadeds "Press any key to load DVD" then goes to a blank screen and DVD spins down after a minute or so.

Again, everything on PC seems to work untill I try to load ANY hard drive DVD, internal hard drive, USB then I get the same results (Blank Screen).

I did set to Legacy and also UEFI and also set them back.

Did you press the "any" key?  If so, the DVD should spin-down, as the motherboard starts to boot from the disk-drive.

Can you remove the original disk-drive, and attach it as a "secondary" disk-drive in some other desktop computer, to see if it can be detected by Windows, and then to see if the files on that disk-drive can be accessed.

HP Recommended

Yes, I removed original hard drive and plugged it into my test bench.

All files are there.

Ran CHKDSK, ran sfc /scannow.

No errors.

Ran Windows Defender on it, ran Malwarbytes.

No errors or virus'.

Used Windows media creator to setup a Win 10 USB.

Same results.

After I tell PC to boot from USB (blank screen) no activity.

This is with a known working hard drive.

Changing Legacy and or EUFI settings dosen't change results.

Any hard drive fails to load DVD, internal hard drive, USB.

Hi,

BIOS update version 80.19 is the roll back version.  Review this information.  That should be sp85103.exe

Can you get the latest HP Diagnostics USB flash drive to boot? HP Hardware Diagnostics  This flash drive does have firmware management functions.

Reinstall the HD and set the BIOS to UEFI mode and see if the firmware management functions will work from the USB flash drive.
