If the software is loaded (usually automatically) you can scan but most people make the mistake of trying to use the "Scan" button on the printer. If you do that you will get the error message "You need to install or run HP software for feature..". Instead, go to printers under the control panel, find the HP 5510 printer icon, double-click it, then you should see an option to "Scan a document or picture".

I have a new computer w/ windows 8 & while I can use my scanner on officejet 5510 aio, I can no longer find a way to scan to pdf...it only allows me to scan to a bmp, jpg, png, or tif, so basically all "pictures". This doesn't work for what I need to do. Can anyone help me figure out how to work windows 8 & get it to scan to pdf so I don't have to go buy a new scanner?

Hello,
I see that you're having an issue with not being able to scan PDF. This might be because PDF isn't listed as a scan option in solution center. I would suggest following this document which will guide you through setting up your scan options.
Let me know the outcome.
