I am tring to use my chromebook but each time I try and type the cursor diverts, selects tabs, glitches, etc. I have tried restarting multiple times, wiping the screen and deleting files in storage. There have been no improvements.

Hi @16butterflies,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the screen issue.

It sounds like you're experiencing erratic behavior with your HP Chromebook's screen and touchpad or keyboard inputs. This kind of issue could be caused by hardware problems, software glitches, or even specific settings that are interfering with normal operation. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:

Check for External Devices:

  • Disconnect any external devices (such as USB drives, external keyboards, or mice) that might be connected to your Chromebook, as they could be causing interference.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • A hard reset can help resolve minor glitches by refreshing the Chromebook's hardware:
    • Turn off your Chromebook.
    • Press and hold the Refresh button (circular arrow key) and tap the Power button.
    • Release the Refresh button when your Chromebook starts up.

Disable Tap-to-Click and Check Touchpad Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Device > Touchpad and disable "Tap-to-click" to see if it helps reduce the erratic cursor movements.
  • Adjust touchpad sensitivity to see if it stabilizes cursor behavior.

Test in Guest Mode:

  • Log out of your account and use the Chromebook in Guest Mode to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is related to your user profile or settings:
    • Click on your account photo in the bottom right.
    • Click on "Sign out".
    • Select Browse as Guest from the login screen.

Check for Software Updates:

  • Make sure your Chromebook is up to date with the latest Chrome OS updates, as updates often include bug fixes that could resolve such issues:
    • Click on the time in the bottom right, then select Settings.
    • Click on About Chrome OS at the bottom of the settings menu.
    • Click Check for updates and install any available updates.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Please mark this post as Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

Hi @16butterflies ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Powerwash (Factory Reset):

  • If the problem continues, performing a Powerwash can reset your Chromebook to its factory settings. This can resolve software-related issues but will erase all local data, so make sure to back up any important files:
    • Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings.
    • Click on Powerwash > Restart.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your Chromebook.

Check for Physical Damage or Loose Connections:

  • Inspect the screen, keyboard, and touchpad for any signs of physical damage.
  • If comfortable, gently check the screen bezel for any looseness or if the touchpad appears misaligned.

Run Diagnostics:

  • HP Chromebooks often have built-in diagnostic tools you can use to test for hardware issues:
    • Turn off your Chromebook.
    • Press and hold Esc + Refresh and then press the Power button.
    • Release the buttons when a recovery screen appears, then follow any prompts for diagnostics.

Adjust Display Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Device > Displays and check if there are any unusual settings, such as mirroring or adjusting the resolution, that might be causing the cursor to behave unexpectedly.

Try Using an External Keyboard or Mouse:

  • If possible, connect an external keyboard or mouse to see if the issue persists. If the problem stops, the internal keyboard or touchpad may be faulty.

Check for Malware or Extensions:

  • Malware is rare on Chromebooks but not impossible. Disable any extensions by going to chrome://extensions/ and check if the issue is resolved.

If none of the above steps resolve the problem, it's possible that there's a deeper hardware issue, such as a faulty touchpad, keyboard, or internal cable connection. At this point, contacting HP phone support would be the best next step.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
