Personal Observations...

Search > Indexing can suffer from odd occurrences - it does not always tolerate unknown user for example.  It won't usually hang on this, but sometimes having an "unknown" user listed in Indexing > Modify can slow or halt the search results (personal observation only).

The database can become corrupted - it happens.  Build a new database Indexing > Advanced

The database can become unwieldy (large, cumbersome, prone to slowness or breakage) - reduce the number of folders and areas that are included in the search Index.  Pick and choose which folders to include, in other words.

Some folders and locations on your system or additional disks in the system can slow index updates.  If you have pounded on this enough, remove the troublesome folder / location and be done with it.  Problem?  Disk or File system errors, maybe.  Different subject.

Bad updates - unusual but can happen - can corrupt search results and even impact whether rebuilding the Index database works as expected.  This is another "personal observation" - ignore it if you don't agree.  Thanks.
