It's a desk top computer installed about 5 months ago. Today I've suddenly had problems getting on-line. I've followed up various reboot options and switched the computer off and on but it insists that there is a system config error.

You need to separate your question. Booting is first, internet is second. If it can not boot-up, that is the main issue. Specify what options you followed trying to re-boot. Switching on and off it not a hard reset. You needed to disconnect the power from the back of the unit, and the wall plug, otherwise standby power is still applied to the system.
Did you make a repair USB drive? If not, go here, "download tool now" to USB 16GB
