HP no longer supports your PC with the cloud recovery tool since it is more than 5 years old.

You can use the Microsoft media creation tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive and reinstall Windows.

Download Windows 10

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

Paul, I'm not so sure about the 5 year limit. For example, if you go to the HP link just below that shows at least a large number of the available HP Cloud Recovery kit downloads you'll see the Z440 listed which is beyond 5 years. Go HERE and use CTRL +F to find Z440 on that large document, and HP also provides Recovery kits for many other HP computers than that document shows. It is the installed Client that lets you search for all kits. Up at the very top there is a currently active updated link via clicking on "Download Cloud Recovery Client." That gets you the most recent HP Cloud Recovery Client installer SoftPaq download. The ZX40 series was the first generation of workstations that HP provided the Cloud Recovery  kits for, and I've used that to do clean HP-provided installs on our ZX40 workstations. I don't know if the OP's computer is from before or after that. The ZX20 series workstations don't and won't have Recovery packages for using this approach ever.

A while back I posted my method HERE. I just checked... that "Download Cloud Recovery Client" link previously provided an earlier SoftPaq (SP150676, released 12/21/23) and now provides an updated one, SP156169, released 12/9/24. Direct download of that newest one from the HP FTP servers is HERE, and its HP ReadMe is HERE.

HP keeps us confused because the list of supported platforms in that newest ReadMe is short. However, the Cloud Recovery Client that you download can pull over the correct Recovery kit for many other HP computers as shown in my prior post. The Client, once installed, provides the mechanism for also entering your Product ID number if you choose to download from another even non-HP computer. That may be the situation the OP currently is in if he can't boot from his HP.

This method has let us harvest the latest HP Cloud Recovery Client version, and then the Recovery kits via the Client.  It works much better than HP's other approach that just provides a box to enter your Product ID into (which in my experience rarely works correctly):

EDIT: A couple of tips: When you download and run as administrator the SP156169 not much seems to happen. However, in the background a small launcher app has been loaded that you can reach via a Start search for HP Cloud Recovery Tool, and you can see the install being present via Control Panel/ Programs and Features/ HP Cloud Recovery showing date of install and version. An unexpected requirement is that you use a 32GB or larger thumb drive even though the amount downloaded is much smaller. A third tip is that this is for Windows installs. If your workstation was not Windows licensed via HP (a Linux version, for example) the HP Recovery Client won't work. However, your W10 Pro 64 license from HP or a non-HP source will work for getting the latest W11 Pro upgrade, whether your hardware is officially eligible or by using the available workarounds. I'm running 24H2, the latest that way, for all of our ZX40 workstations.

I'm very sure--like 100% sure.

You cannot compare business class PC's with consumer class PCs as far as driver support, and other support such as the cloud recovery tool.

I've been tracking this for the last year.

When the HP cloud recovery tool first came out, most HP consumer class PC's made in 2016 or later that came with Windows were supported by the software.

My assumption was that as long as the driver page existed, the recovery tool software would be available for download.

Then all of a sudden, late in 2023 or early 2024, folks started posting questions about the cloud recovery tool not working for their PC's anymore.

I knew for a fact that they used to be but then more and more of these questions arose, so I decided to experiment.

The first sweep removed hundreds of PC's from 2016 to those made in 2018 or earlier from cloud recovery tool support.

Now they are removing PC's made in 2019 from support and this year the 2020's will be gone.

I have a HP consumer notebook made in 2020 and it is still currently supported by the tool, but I can guarantee you that by year's end it no longer will be.

The action is totally unrelated to how HP manages the business class PC's where the cloud recovery tool supports most Probook and Elitebook G2's and newer and HP Prodesk and Elitedesk G2's and newer and those are way more than 5 years old, and the cloud recovery client still works for those.

Paul,

Thanks! Very interesting. I figured you might have some inside info...

I'll go download a kit to have a backup for our ZX40 workstations just in case HP starts removing the older workstation ones too. They only have a W10 kit for that generation, but all in the series use same SoftPaq. Those Recovery kits were HP engineer built and work great for then upgrading to the latest W11 version from.

You're very welcome.

I guess I should make the recovery drive for my notebook just in case.

I prefer to clean install the OS and manually install all the drivers anyway, so it's not a big deal to me, but it would help if I gave the notebook away to someone in the future.
