Unable to install windows10

I have an HP Pavilion 570 with a 120Gb SSD and a 3Tb SATA drive. The PC came pre-loaded with windows 10.

I installed linux mint alongside windows but got fed up with windows not updating – not enough disk space.

I decided to move the windows os to the SATA drive as I use linux most of the time so I copied the SSD partitions to the SATA drive to no avail.

I then tried to install win10 from the internet but inadvertently wiped the SSD.

I reinstalled linux on the SSD but cannot boot and created a win10 usb installation. I disabled the secure boot and enabled legacy mode. I then shut down the computer via the power button and re-started with the usb as the boot media. I got the error “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed”. I went through the whole procedure again with the same result.

I have a windows 7 dvd which will boot but the mouse wouldn’t work so I couldn’t get past the first page of the installation.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry for your troubles ... but we can't help you with dual-boot with Linux, as we do not provide Linux support here.

As to Win10, 120GB is MORE than enough room for it on an on going basis.  I have an 80GB partition and have never had problems with running out of space -- but then, I use these techniques to regularly clean up the drive:

In addition, I have found the utility Cleanmgr+ to have LOTS of options for removing Windows junk, including log files. I use it practically every day. You can get it from here: https://www.getclone.app/download/category/11-cleanmgr

Your best bet at this point would be to create Win10 install media from an MS download and reinstall Win10 to the SSD.

1) Use this link to download and create Win10 install media: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

2)Boot your PC from that media and install Win10 to the SSD.  When you get a window asking for a product ID, look at the bottom of the window for a link to skip that step and continue with the installation.  When you have finished and the PC goes online, it will contact the MS servers and activate automatically./

How do I get to boot from usb stick?

With Win10, you do NOT want to be installing in Legacy mode, and if your drive is formatted GPT, which would be the case with new PCs, then Windows will not boot or install in legacy mode as it will not even see the drive.

IF the drive has been formatted MBR, then the PC should see the install media and if it does not, I have no idea why not.

I got the disable secure boot and enable legacy mode somewhere in HP website. I returned the bios to factory defaults, plugged in my usb stick and switched on the PC. It went straight into the install windows10 procedure and am now dual booting win10 and linux. Thanks very much for your help.
