HP ENVY x360 15m-eu0 Convertible PC (267R7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello!

For the past 9 or so days, my laptop (HP Envy x360) has been experiencing frequent crashes with the blue screen of death (BSOD) and the main error that I see is "UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION". My laptop crashes multiple times everyday and this is very annoying. It has been working perfectly fine since I bought it 2 years ago.

I have looked online to try and solve the issue and have done pretty much everything suggested but nothing has worked. I don't know what to do. Nothing is wrong with the hardware of my laptop because I have done multiple system tests and everything thing is fine. So, it probably has to be a software issue or something.

I have checked my Event Viewer and it usually shows an error: "Event 161, volmgr" - "Dump file creation failed due to error during dump creation" and then followed by the crash "Event 41, Kernel-Power" - "This system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly".

Can anyone help me?

Hi

You could have an external power supply problem or a MB power delivery problem based on the errors you are experiencing.

See troubleshooting steps here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/debugger/bug-check-0x154--unexpected-stor...

And, Event ID 41 here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/performance/event-id-41-restart

I don't think an intermittent  power delivery issue will be detected by diagnostics. Have you run the full suite of HP Diagnostics' system and component tests in addition to the system tests you have done to verify other hardware?

If all else fails, back up data and/or create a verified and recoverable system disk backup and recovery image and the required USB boot recovery media. Reinstall Windows clean or do a HP Cloud Recovery

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4511095-4511141-16

Same symptoms using a clean Windows installation or a HP Cloud Recovery would suggest you have a hardware problem.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I did a full HP System Extensive Test earlier today and everything passed.

Here is a picture of the results:

I have done the chkdsk  (Check Disk) command multiples times with no luck. Also, I did the System File Checker scan numerous times as well (each time it says "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations").  I reset my laptop earlier today too and I still get the blue screen of death. It's very frustrating and this just started happening all of a sudden for no reason.

Hi @GoldenCobra

My pleasure.

The diagnostic tests passed. This is good.

A reset did not fix the problem. This is not good.

So I think you have an intermittent power delivery problem. This means a power supply problem or a MB problem. You could have a component connected to the MB that is causing an intermittent fault. No way to isolate this in a forum. The other component fault would have to occur during hardware diagnostics.

You need HP factory Service if in warranty https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact/help/laptop

Or have a local PC tech troubleshoot to find the bad part.

Hi

There is a possibility you have a heat problem. I didn't see any demanding hardware when checking your  your PC's specs. Component over voltage can cause heat problems.

Have you checked system temps?

Try HWiNFO 64 bit portable https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

Keep this running while you use the PC. Maybe you can spot something just before the PC crashes.

I'm not sure if I have a heat problem. I've checked my system temps and they are normal, so yeah I don't know.

My laptop will crash (with the same blue screen error) sometimes when I open it after I wake up in the morning after not using it for hours. I can't imagine it having heat problems after being asleep for hours.

I guess my most likely route is to get it checked out at an HP service center near me. It's a fairly new laptop though (only 2 years old), so that sucks.

Hi Bill,

I think that I may have found the reason (or a reason) that my computer is crashing. During a BSOD failure I saw something that said "What failed: msfs.sys".

I looked up msfs.sys and apparently it is "is a driver file that facilitates communication via the Mailslot, a method for one-way interprocess communication".

Hi

Interesting. Run a check disk again at an admin command prompt.

Then try no page file. Restart the PC

Reset the page file to previous setting to rebuild the page file. See if this helps.

Also, random blue screen error messages usually point to hardware problems

Hi @GoldenCobra

Rechecked your previous responses and noticed you have tried a system reset.

A reset should fix system file/driver problems.

I am still thinking you have a hardware problem.

I think that you might be right. It probably is a hardware issue.

If it is a hardware problem then I think that I will have to buy a new laptop. It doesn't make sense to me to get it fixed when it might just happen again. I really don't want to buy a new laptop but I'll have to make that sacrifice. That really sucks.

Thank you Bill for all of your help!
