Replacing a BIOS chip these days is NOT as it used to be. You can't just pull it out of MB. Everything is soldered to PCB.

Getting a new MB from HP is a pain - website say - not orderable part.

"The following part(s) you entered were not found or not orderable:
782614-501  (Part is not orderable, HP Part Partners may help.)
"

My only hope to get it from ebay and to make sure it is NOT preloaded with the LATEST BIOS firmware 😞

BTW, spoke with HP "out of warranty" agent.

He says that they can send me W8.1 DVD media and i will only pay small shipping, etc.

What i am going to do with it if i cannot even boot PC without HDD attached. I can't get to any options, etc

Useless suggestion from HP.

I understand that the BIOS chip is soldered in but it is still a possibility to replace it.  And EBay is a source I consider when looking for old stock.  Normally the seller has a return policy if the part is defective.  It would extend the life of the PC for a few more years.

Will you be able to assist in identifying the "right part" for the BIOS chip on this MB?

You will probably need to go to a 3rd party vendor.  see if one of these vendors can help

If i do not get any help from HP, then yes.

Have you noticed how almost impossible it becomes to find any usefull information on the Internet?

Like the HP/MSI MB diagram. Or how impossible it is to get the replacement parts from HP? Today HP Parts Surfer agent provided several phone numbers for HP parts partners. I dialed all of them - no one ever carried the MB i am looking for.

Check MSI page for their MS-7906 MB. Zero information.

Actually, maybe it is a good thing? If i did not see the BIOS update recommendation on my PC's support page, we would not be having this conversation 🙂

Considering that PC is only a couple years old, that is strange.  No motherboards or parts.  There is a vendor on EBay that sells BIOS chips:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/BIOS-CHIP-for-MSI-MS-7778-Jasmine-motherboard-HP-and-Compaq-Desktop-PCs/1412...

Not for that specific motherboard but comminicate with them to see if they want to help.  Other than changing the BIOS chip, it is a motherboard replacement from one of the EBay vendors.

I am leery of upgrading just for the sake of upgrading and your experience just reinforces the point.

I am comfortable with soldering and this could be the only option. This site below shows some empty BIOS CHIPs:
