I have tried to update my PC with 169 updates, it takes ages to do then when trying to configure I get the message " Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes "

This also takes ages.

Any help please.

This has become a "standard problem" with anyone trying to do Windows Updates in Win7 these days.

I maintain some PCs that still use Win7 (their owners despise Win10) and have found that the steps detailed below help to overcome the hung Windows Update problem ...

Download these updates before starting the installation process and copy them to a USB flash drive.

NOTE: If Win7 is not already running SP1, then you need to download and install it before running these Updates.

Once you have these updates saved, disconnect the network cable or disable the WiFi.

Install these updates from the flash drive before connecting to the network and running Windows Update.

You have to stop the Windows Update service BEFORE installing each of these. You do that by opening a command window and entering: net stop wuauserv

Note: If you have a problem with KB3172605, post back as there is a separate fix for that.

Then, after you re-enable Windows Update, it should only take 2-4 hours to find and do the updates, not days.

Doing 169 of anything (from push-ups to eating a meal) will take a considerable amount of time.  🙂

Since you have Windows 7, you can select which of the updates to apply -- click the top-most check-box [see the image below]  to "de-select" all of the named updates, and then individually select a number of them, say 30 or 40, and then let Windows Update install those updates, and reboot.  Now that you have 129 to 139 updates, de-select all, select another 30 or 40, and repeat the update & reboot.  Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Each of the updates is "independent" -- there's no need to worry about in which order you apply the updates.
