Hi @Ddunn1953,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Slim Desktop PC S01-aF2000i is stuck on a black screen with the message "Updates are underway. Do not turn off your computer", and this message persists even after rebooting. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Steps to Fix the Issue

  1. Wait It Out (If Possible)
Sometimes Windows updates can take a long time, especially if it's a major update. If the message is still showing after 1–2 hours, proceed to the next steps.

  2. Perform a Hard Reboot
    • Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds until the PC shuts down.
    • Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
    • If the same screen appears again, continue to the next step.

  3. Boot into Safe Mode
    • Turn off the PC.
    • Turn it back on and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly until the Recovery screen appears.
    • Navigate to Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode with Networking.
    • If it boots successfully, you can uninstall recent updates or perform a system restore.

  4. System Restore (if available)
    • From the Recovery screen, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
    • Choose a restore point before the update occurred.

  5. Automatic Repair
    • From the same Recovery screen, select Startup Repair to let Windows try to fix the issue automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your time and efforts. but the solutions you  suggested did not work, to my dismay!

I tried several of the suggestions, the computer has been left on for several days and the message still read, updates are Underway, do not turn computer off.  After the second week, I began to reach out for solutions, none have worked thus far. Thanks again for your kindness and your efforts.
