I have the HP Envy Desktop 750-524 with an Odense2-K motherboard.

750-524 PC Product Specifications

I am looking to upgrade this system.   It functions mostly as an extra PC in the house but as my Plex Media server and my network's main PC with is hard-wired to the router.

I have done some reading and here is what I'd like to upgrade:

1. RAM,  can one really go above 16GB as I have read in some discussions (to 32GB)?

 motherboard specifications, Odense2-K

  • Dual channel (one DIMM per channel) memory architecture
  • Two DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets
  • Supports the following:
    • PC4-17000 (DDR4-2133)
    • PC4-19200 (DDR4-2400) (with Pavilion Power chassis only)
  • Supports 4 GB and 8 GB UDIMMs
  • Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit systems
    note:
32-bit systems cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
  • Supports up to 16 GB (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers

Even if possible, this must be verifiable with the crucial site

This may be unnecessary:

Add RAM

2. Upgrade the processor from Intel Core i7-7700 KabyLake to the Intel Core i7-7700K  (this was the only upgrade option I read about)

3. If I upgrade the processor, should I get a new heat sync/fan or is the OEM sufficient?

it's the overclock version, maybe not possible to modify anything, but yes, the system may not be enough

4. I would like to upgrade the Wireless Intel dual band Wireless AC 7265NGW, is this possible?

One M.2 socket 1, key A

I couldn't assure you of anything for this

5.  Lastly, utilize the PIC slot and get a graphics card (most I have seen recommend the GTX1660Ti (as anything better would require a new power supply).

You will have to check your power supply is only 300w
If the chosen model is not too big, need additional pci power supply connectors etc!

Of course my other option would be to scrap it altogether but it seems to be a fairly good workhorse for me and just some upgrades might help vs. spending $1000-$2000 on something new.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Calculate everything you want to replace
but it may not be worth it, for a somewhat old pc

At best frankly a small graphics card while waiting to change, would already be not bad

@schwandog33 -- 4 questions.

Sorry to the other contributor, but I think that you want specific information.

1. RAM,  can one really go above 16GB as I have read in some discussions (to 32GB)?

Before you spend any money, open the Windows "Task Manager", and switch to the "Performance" tab.

How much of your current RAM is being used?

If you are using less than 50%, then adding more RAM is a waste of your money.

2. Upgrade the processor from Intel Core i7-7700 KabyLake to the Intel Core i7-7700K  (this was the only upgrade option I read about)

You asked this question last month, and got a good reply.

3. If I upgrade the processor, should I get a new heat sync/fan or is the OEM sufficient?

If the new processor consumes the same wattage as your current processor, you do not NEED to upgrade.

You may WANT to upgrade, if you are "belt-and-suspenders" type of person.

4. I would like to upgrade the Wireless Intel dual band Wireless AC 7265NGW, is this possible?

Yes, but the network speed provided by your Internet Service Provider will stay the same.

So, if you are currently paying for more than 1.0 Gigabit/second speed, and the ISP's modem also has an "AC" wireless adapter,  then the modem will receive at that more speed, and will send/receive to that Intel adapter at the more 1.2 Gigabit/second speed to your computer.

If your I.S.P. is providing less than 1.0 Gigabit/second speed, then the Ethernet cable between your cable--modem and your computer will send/receive at that same speed.

If your I.S.P. is providing more than 1.0 Gigabit/second speed, and the I.S.P.'s modem has a 10 Gigabit/second network adapter, and your computer has a 10 Gigabit/second network adapter,  then you can receive at whatever speed that the I.S.P. offers.  Such 10 Gbps routers for a personal computer are over $200.

5.  Lastly, utilize the PIC slot and get a graphics card (most I have seen recommend the GTX1660Ti (as anything better would require a new power supply).

Yes, this is possible, for the part of each day that the computer is used as a "workstation", not as a "server".

But, if it is "mostly" used as a server, it is a waste of money to upgrade the graphics adapter.

I answered

If the new processor consumes the same wattage as your current processor, you do not NEED to upgrade.
Intel Core i7-7700 TDP: 65W
CPU speed: 3.6 GHz (max turbo boost - 4.2 GHz)
Intel Core i7-7700K (Kabylake) 4.2 GHz Quad Core tdp:91 W

I answered in relation to this, it would be better to have a suitable system, it may heat up more
