The error code is actually  0xe0ef000e and indicates corrupted files

Some backup software will not run if it detects a problem with the drive that is being backed up.  See if there is an override option.  Alternatively one must boot a stand alone backup app from a 3rd party

You might press ESC after powering on and run one pass thru the diagnostics

If disk is OK possibly system files are bad.  Please run SFC /SCANNOW  from the administrator command prompt to fix any system files.

once you get it backed up please consider upgrading to windows 10.  It is still a free upgrade

Can’t wait to try this. In all that i have researched none of this came up. I have done a hard drive scan and physically there are no errors. I am trying to back up some information now and will get to this today.

Ok, ran SFC /SCANNOW.  And it found corrupt files that it couldn’t repair.  An SQM error on C:\windows\servicing\sqm\cbsscavengestarvationsession_0_std.sqm, status: 0x80072ee2, http response 500

Try  dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

from the admin command prompt as discussed here

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/window-81-dism-online-cleanup-image-scanhealth...

It is possible, even likely, that the modules needed for repair are no longer on any of the Microsoft update serves

If dism does not work then I recommend an in place upgrade to windows 10

possibly the following might helpful instead

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-refresh-reset-or-restore-your-windows-8-1-pc-5139....

For upgrade to 10 then select "Update now" below

Looking at the log above, the last date in it was 9-9,

it appears my current log hasn’t been captured. Here is the scan is being run by a recovery program

I will do that. Thank you so much for all of your assistance.

I actually was able to finish the system refresh, however it is windows 8, not 8.1 and I have no internet connection even though it shows I’m connected.  One step at a time
