@901Snoop, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like your computer didn’t shut down properly and now it's stuck in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This usually happens when Windows detects an issue during startup. Don't worry — I’ll guide you through fixing the problem.

Try Booting Normally

From the screen you see:

Choose Continue (Exit and continue to Windows 10).

See if Windows loads properly.

If it does boot:

You may be okay, but you should still check for errors and possibly set up a new admin account (more on that below).

If it does not boot or crashes/restarts:

Go to Troubleshoot instead.

Use Startup Repair

Select Troubleshoot.

Select Advanced Options.

Choose Startup Repair.

Windows will attempt to fix any issues that are preventing startup. Let it run — this can take some time.

If Startup Repair fails, continue below.

Run System File Checker

Still in Safe Mode or if you can boot normally:

Open Command Prompt as Administrator.

Run: sfc /scannow

This scans and repairs system files.

Reset Windows (Only If Nothing Else Works)

From Troubleshoot > Reset this PC:

Choose Keep my files (this will reinstall Windows but keep few of your documents).

Note: Back up your files

Follow the instructions.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello, thank you for your reply. To do most of what you suggested, my computer is saying,"you need to sign in as an administrator to continue, but there aren't any administrator accounts on this PC. How do I proceed?

Also forgot your password or don't see your account does nothing but restart the computer.

Hey @901Snoop,

Thank you for your response

If your HP laptop is asking for a power-up code or password and you don't have it, you can follow these steps to recover or bypass the issue:

Resetting Your Microsoft Account Password:

  • If the password is for your Microsoft account, you can reset it using another device.
  • Go to the Microsoft Recover your account page and follow the on-screen directions to reset your password.

BIOS Password Recovery:

  • If the power-up code or password is for BIOS, you will need to reset or bypass it.
  • You can try the following steps:
    • Shut down the laptop and remove any peripheral devices.
    • Disconnect all external devices and power cables.
    • Try removing the battery (if the battery is removable) and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
    • Reinsert the battery and try powering on the laptop.

If this doesn't work, we may need to consider getting the device repaired, as HP doesn't set a default admin password. In that case, the system board might need to be addressed.

I hope this helps.
