HP Pavilion All-in-One - 27-r114
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I inherited this desktop. The family tried to reset to factory, but Windows won't install or load Windows. After turning on, the windows logo appears, then a message box  that says,

"INSTALL WINDOWS" with an error that says, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows  click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

I have turned off and on and have clicked OK.  Same error each time. The computer was a gift. They tried to reset to factory, but Windows won't install/load.  Do I have to reinstall from disk?  Do I need a new Windows code?

Hi:

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with that problem.

The keyboard should have worked fine to enter the 4-digit code.

The product specs indicate the PC is touch screen capable, so the on-screen keyboard should also have worked.

Hi:

The Windows product key is in the PC's BIOS, so you don't need to buy a new copy of Windows.

Your PC is supported by the HP cloud recovery tool which you can use with another PC running W7 64 bit or newer and a 32 GB USB flash drive to create a bootable recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with the PC.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility:

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

Since you can't use the tool on your PC as it is not working, it cannot automatically detect the product number that is required, so enter the product number for your PC in the tool's search window, which is:  3LA05AA#ABA

Hi and thanks so much for your reply.

I followed your and HP's recovery instructions.   Still no joy.  I've tried three times with the same result.  I listed the steps I followed below.   At a certain point I get the original issue.  Can you spot what may be going wrong?

Thanks again!

I ordered the 32 gig Flash drive. I created the reboot tool using the computercode you gave me. I put it into USB slot. I followed the directions to press escape until I could select F9. I got the option to select the USB drive and did so.  Eventually a box comes up that says "RECOVERY MANAGER "  The box has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point insde.  Next to the box it says 0XFFEE016 with an OK button at the bottom.   I press ENTER.  The computer goes for a while, then I get the same error message box as before:

"INSTALL WINDOWS" with an error that says, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows  click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

YIKES!

I guess not all of my reply posted. The INSTALL RECOVERY box has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside. Next to the box is the code 0XFFEFEE016.  I press enter and get the original error message:

"INSTALL WINDOWS" with an error that says, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to do when the recovery media doesn't work.

It's basically an automated program and you have no input other than to follow the on-screen menu prompts.

The steps you took sound right to me, but the only thing I don't understand is why you are getting a Recovery manager notification.

Someone notified the forum administrators regarding posts being cut off ending in the 3...

The site just got a major 'facelift,' so there were a couple of bugs that are being worked out.

The PC should have booted from the USB flash drive and provided you with a menu to run the factory reset without trying to access the recovery manager program.

At this point, you may want to use the Microsoft Media creation tool to create a bootable USB installer that will install a plain version of W10.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

Then you can download and install the available drivers and software from the support page.

At least that way you should be able to get your PC up and running again.

Thanks so much!  I will try.  I have a Windows install disk, so will try that, then the recovery disk again.  If that doesn't work, will download drivers, etc., as you suggest.

Thanks again.

Hi again,

Im not sure whether this should be a new post.  I so appreciate your guidance, so thought I'd ask here first.

I've followed a video on how to enable legacy media so I can load Windows 10 from a DVD.  I changed the Secure Boot Mode, but now it wants me to enter a "[4-digit code] + ENTER - to "complete the change."  I've tried with both the keyboard and the on-screen keyboard which appeared.  The on-screen keyboard seems to be responsive to touch. I don't know if this computer is touchscreen-enabled. Neither method worked for me.  Any suggestions?  I'm out of my depth here.

All the best
