Hi @basuage,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop battery is misreporting its charge level, causing it to shut down unexpectedly at high percentages (first at 40%, now at 90%). This is a classic sign of a battery calibration issue or battery degradation.

Steps to Fix It

1. Battery Calibration (Manual Method)

Try recalibrating the battery to reset its charge reporting:

  1. Fully charge the laptop to 100% while powered off.
  2. Boot into Windows and disable sleep/hibernate:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Put the computer to sleep > Never.
  3. Let the laptop fully discharge until it shuts down on its own.
  4. Leave it off for at least 2 hours.
  5. Plug it in and charge to 100% without interruption.
  6. Restart and check if the issue persists.

2. Run HP Battery Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc, then F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Battery Test.
  • It will show battery health and whether it needs replacement.

3. Update BIOS and Battery Drivers

  • Use HP Support Assistant or visit the HP Drivers Page Official HP® Support.
  • Update:
    • BIOS
    • Battery firmware
    • Chipset drivers

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
