Pavilion 500-267c desktop pc. Error code : 0x8078011e. Tried to use a Seagate external hard drive as a backup and it failed to successfully backup my files. What's an ESP and how do I clear it??

Greetings,
Welcome to the forum.
I am not a HP employee.
Are you using Avast?
This (Link) suggest Avast or some other security software may be causing the problem. Please read all posts in this thread.
You could have OS corruption. Run a Check Disk (Link).
Something else could be causing this problem. The complexity of Windows creates a troubleshooting nightmare when things don't work correctly.
You might want to look at an alternative ways to create reliable OS image backups and bootable recovery media.
I use Macrium Reflect free (Link).
Regards
