Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My remote keyboard is locked and refuses any suggestions.  Now the computer is asking for a restart.  How can I do this without the keyboard?

Hi @huckleberry21l,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your computer asking for a restart while your keyboard is not responding. Let’s go through a few checks.

Before we proceed:
Are you able to use your mouse normally?

Meanwhile, you can follow these steps:

Step 1: Restart Using the Mouse

  • Click the Start button on the taskbar.
  • Click the Power icon.
  • Select Restart.
  • If you are on the sign-in screen:
  • Click the Power icon in the lower-right corner.
  • Select Restart.

Step 2: Use Ctrl + Alt + Delete (If Mouse Works)

  • Press and hold the physical Power button for 5 seconds only if the screen is frozen.
  • If the screen is responsive, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete (if any keyboard key works).
  • Click the Power icon in the lower-right.
  • Select Restart.
  • If the keyboard is fully unresponsive, continue below.

Step 3: Use the Physical Power Button (Safe Method)

  • Press and hold the laptop or desktop Power button for 5–10 seconds.
  • Wait until the computer fully shuts down.
  • Wait 10 seconds.
  • Press the Power button again to turn it back on.

CAUTION: Only use this method if normal restart options are unavailable. It may close open programs without saving.

Step 4: Remove External Keyboard (If Wireless)

  • Turn off the remote keyboard.
  • Disconnect the USB receiver (if used).
  • Restart using the mouse or power button.
  • After restart, reconnect the keyboard to see if it responds normally.

If the computer restarts successfully but the keyboard remains locked, the keyboard itself may need battery replacement or re-pairing.

I hope this helps.
