SimpleSave was never supported beyond Windows 7.
The hard drives included the onboard SimpleSave software used to manage the backups.
Worse, backups made with the software were encrypted.
What? This just means if you cannot access / use the software, you have little chance of getting a hold of the data on the hard drive.
If the drive is functional at all,
If you can find a Windows 7 system,
Connect the drive to that computer and see if you can get into the software.
