i got a HP 15-dy2035tg laptop for christmas about 3 or 4 years ago and that same year it broke but i’m not sure if it did or if it’s an easy fix, i simply opened my laptop maybe a little too far and my screen went dark as if the brightness was at 0 but i could still see the screen picture slightly when i put it at an angle, i’ve tried things like turning up the brightness manually, updating graphics, and i even restarted the entire laptop but that did not work and i really need it to start working as soon as possible

Hi @Tony231912,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP 15-dy2035tg’s backlight may have failed when the lid was opened too far. The fact that you can still faintly see the screen image at an angle means the LCD panel is working, but the backlight isn’t illuminating it. Here’s what you can do:

Likely Causes

  • Damaged display cable (often happens if the hinge was stressed).
  • Faulty backlight or inverter (in older models, though most modern laptops have integrated LED backlights).
  • Loose connector between the motherboard and display.

Steps to Diagnose & Fix

  1. External Monitor Test
    • Connect your laptop to an external display via HDMI.
    • If the external display works fine, the issue is isolated to the laptop screen/backlight.

  2. Perform a Hard Reset
    • Power off the laptop, unplug the charger, and remove the battery (if removable).
    • Hold the power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect and power on.

  3. Check Brightness & Drivers
    • You’ve already tried this, so likely not the cause.

  4. Inspect Display Cable & Hinges
    • If you’re comfortable opening the laptop:
      • Remove the bottom cover and check the display cable near the hinge for damage or looseness.
      • Reseat the cable firmly.

  5. Replace Display Assembly
    • If the cable is intact, the backlight may be dead. The fix is usually replacing the entire screen assembly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
