Hi @4r9ocksta0p2w

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the keyboard.

The issue you're describing with your HP Chromebook 11A G8 Education Edition, where the keyboard is typing multiple characters or typing incorrectly, could be caused by various factors. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check for Stuck or Sticky Keys

  • Physical keys: Some keys might be physically stuck or have debris under them, causing multiple characters to be typed when you press a key. Gently press each key to see if any feel different or sticky. If so, try cleaning the keyboard.
  • Cleaning: Turn off the Chromebook, and gently clean the keyboard using compressed air. You can also wipe the keys with a slightly damp cloth.

2. Test in Guest Mode

  • Sign out of your account, then sign in as a Guest to see if the issue persists. If the keyboard works fine in Guest Mode, the issue might be related to a software setting or an extension in your regular account.
  • To enter Guest Mode, click on your profile picture in the bottom-right corner, then click on Sign out. On the login screen, choose Browse as Guest.

3. Reset Keyboard Settings

  • Sometimes, incorrect settings can cause keyboard issues. To reset the keyboard settings:
    1. Click on the time in the bottom-right corner, then click on the Settings gear.
    2. Scroll down and select Advanced.
    3. Under Languages and input, click on Input method.
    4. Ensure the correct keyboard layout is selected. If needed, click on Manage input methods and remove any layouts you don't use.

4. Check for Malware or Extensions

  • If the issue started after installing a new Chrome extension or app, try disabling or removing it to see if the problem goes away. Malware or a faulty extension could be causing the keyboard to behave strangely.
  • To manage extensions:
    1. Open Chrome and click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
    2. Go to More tools > Extensions.
    3. Disable extensions one by one and test the keyboard after each to identify if any are causing the issue.

5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • A hard reset can resolve many hardware-related issues:
    1. Turn off your Chromebook.
    2. Press and hold the Refresh key (the circular arrow) and then tap the Power button.
    3. Release both keys when the Chromebook starts up.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @4r9ocksta0p2w

Please find the remaining steps.

6. Update Chrome OS

  • Make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS. Sometimes, updates include bug fixes for hardware issues.
    1. Click on the time in the bottom-right corner and go to Settings.
    2. Click on About Chrome OS at the bottom of the sidebar.
    3. Click Check for updates and install any available updates.

7. Factory Reset (Powerwash)

  • If the issue persists, you may want to try a factory reset (Powerwash). This will remove all data from your Chromebook, so be sure to back up important files.
    1. Sign out of your Chromebook.
    2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R on the sign-in screen.
    3. Click on Restart.
    4. In the box that appears, click Powerwash and then Continue.

8. Check for Hardware Issues: Click here

  • If none of the above steps work, the keyboard itself might be faulty. In this case, you may need to contact HP Support or take the Chromebook to a repair center for further diagnosis.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
