My HP CD/DVD player (SW810) checks out as operable on my pc. I have both Real Player and VLC Media player software installed. Yet when I insert discs, they are rejected as invalid. I get error messages like: 'playback failure: can't play non-udf mastered cd; your input can't be opened. I've tried a variety of discs; none play back. Please help!

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to play DVDs.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
The standard disc format that preceded UDF is called ISO-9660, which is probably the recording format of your disc. ISO 9660 traces its roots to the High Sierra Format (MAC) file system and it cannot be played on a Windows computer.
I hope that answers your question and you have a great day!

Thank You. Please inform what I should do next to correct my problem? Unfortunately, am not computer savvy, so will need simple instructions. As I understand your answer: my collection of discs were made using an older format (ISO-9660), which my PC can't read. It can only read discs formatted by newer UDF system?b So, in order to read my discs I have to install ISO-9660 software. If this is correct, how do I get that software, and how do I install it. Many thanks for your patience and help.

The DVDs are made using the MAC operating system which uses the UDF format. I recommend you uninstall and reinstall the VLC player on the computer and check whether the DVDs play using VLC player.

I did as you said: uninstalled > reinstalled VLC player. Still no go. On trying several CDs I get error message: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL dvd:///E:/.
