HP Pavilion 23-g010 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

This is what I'm seeing in bottom right corner after a Re-Install of 8.1 with the HP Recovery Disks.  I looked it up and found some info on this site but it was all old.  I'm thinking just installing updates will fix my situation, does anyone have experience with this?  Here is the one link I found, and there is another link to an update that will fix this, but don't know if I need it now that M.S. has probably fixed this?

O, don't know if it matters that I just pur a new HDD in this AIO.

Hi:

Yes, there is an update that will remove that watermark...Windows Update will not automatically install this patch.

The reason you get that notice is that you had to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot to boot from a DVD.

You are the best Paul, I did find it last night really late.  I really appreciate sharing the reason it happened though!

Could I have enabled legacy mode and disable secure boot from BIOS, ESC, F10 etc?  Because I  had no Operating System at the time and still learning Windows 8.1.

You're very welcome.

I don't know what the consequences are if you change the BIOS settings back to the defaults.

Something tells me that the PC won't boot up.

At least that would be the luck I would have.  :generic:

No Paul, I meant, what could I have done to avoid this?  Could I have made a change in UEFI Settings somewhere if  I did not have a operating system?

I don't think you could have done anything to avoid it, because in order to boot from a DVD, you have to enable legacy mode in the BIOS.

I am not sure if you also have to disable secure boot too in orcer to have booted from a DVD, although this link seems to indicate that you do.

I know when installing W7, you have to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot because W7 is not compatible with secure boot, but W8.1 is.

So I would say that there was nothing you could have done to prevent that message from appearing.

And the other thing I don't know is what happens if you change those settings back now that W8.1 is installed.

Would it boot up if you disabled legacy mode and enabled secure boot in the BIOS?

That I do not know.

I'm getting the gist of it anyhow.  I think it could have been avoided if settings were chaned in BIOS like that link states.  I do think however, that hp or MS tweaked this in 8.1 so that installers could boot without changing these settings, because I did without issue, and wondered why at the time.  I also seem to remember lot's of folks talking about creating USB install media with Rufus, because it can be UEFI Compatible.

Thanks again Paul, that's what I need to figure out.  Just checked and Secure Boot is Disabled.  That Link you provided was excellent and appears to say that we can Reset to Default after install with UEFI Enabled.

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

I am hopefull though, that comeone else will confirm for me if it is safe to "Enable" "Secure Boot" now, after this particular situation?
