When I try to use safe mode, I follow the steps as described on the websites, except that on the last page, where I should see a blue screen with choices from 1 to 9, a DOS-style screen appears with choices, but neither the keyboard nor the mouse works.
Why don't I get that blue screen with the choices?

Hi @jeanl66,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact HP model you’re using (laptop or desktop).
  • The version of Windows installed (Windows 10, Windows 11, etc.).
  • How you’re initiating Safe Mode (for example, through Shift + Restart, using msconfig, or pressing F8 during startup).

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try in the meantime:

  • Check USB Ports/Devices: If you’re using a USB keyboard or mouse, try plugging them into different USB ports. Sometimes Safe Mode loads only basic drivers, and certain ports may not respond.
  • Enable Legacy Boot Options: On some systems, pressing F8 during startup may bring up the classic Advanced Boot Options menu. If you’re seeing the DOS-style screen, this might be what’s happening.
  • Use msconfig Method:
    1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
    2. Go to the Boot tab.
    3. Check Safe boot and select Minimal.
    4. Restart your PC — this should take you directly into Safe Mode without needing to select options at startup.
  • Try Different Input Devices: If possible, test with another keyboard or mouse to rule out driver or hardware issues.
  • Update BIOS/Drivers: Outdated firmware or drivers can sometimes cause Safe Mode input issues.

I hope this helps.

When I follow these steps, I arrive at the page in DOS (page 5) format and not the blue page like in the last (page 6) picture!!!
