Wanting upgrade my GPU card from the AMD radeon r7 240.  NOt sure what pci configuration to get.  Do I have x16 or x8 slots?  Can I use a PCIe graphics card?

@jackec1

This is your motherboard: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01925486

You have five slots, three x-1, one x-16, one x-1 minicard..

@jackec1,

Lets get down to the internal nuts, bolts.  It is an AMD 785G chip, PCIEx16 rev 2.

There are some glaring contradictions:

1) That machine is circa 2010.  It should be Legacy BIOS. Test it program,  What is the Boot environment?

2) Stated an R7 card. that is circa 2013, and is a UEFIvBIOS card, which would not be compatible with Legacy BIOS. You said you wondered about PCIEx16, that is the slot the present R7 240 occupies. 🤔

3) 250W PSU running a R7 240 30W card is marginal.

Thanks for the info.  Yes, my BIOS on this machine is LEGACY.  The R7 has been running under this for 3 years. I keep the driver for it updated as sent from AMD periodically.  Windows Task Manager show the GPU bumping up to 89-100 percent when I am processing  an AI generated image. That's why Iwant to upgrade.

I know 250W PSU is wimpy, but I have a Corsair 500W coming soon.

As to the GPU, Then if the R7 isn't supposed to run in my card/slot, what would I look for that is compatible? .  As said before, I know that I'm riding an old horse here, but my nature wants to try and make the most of it! Ha.
