Hp Pavilion Desktop 550-204nl
Microsoft Windows XP

Hi all, i'm trying to install Windows XP to a secondary partition on my computer (with windows 10 on the primary partition).

I'm able to arrive at the installation phase, but it doesn't find the partition i've created for WinXP, and i've readed online that i need to install the "SATA drivers AHCI or RAID" or something... i've searched a lot, utility like NLite that can put my drivers on the installation ISO for WinXP, so i would be able to install F6 floppy drivers just from my usb...

The problem is that:

1 - i dont know which drivers i need to install, i've found on the HP site (in the drivers of my Pavilion 550-204nl) two different drivers for "Ahci" and for "Raid" (dont know which one is, and if are THEY the correct drivers, or if i need to search elsewhere)

2 - even if i find the correct drivers, i dont know how to "convert" them into a bootable F6 FLOPPY DRIVER for using in NLite or programs like this.

Someone got the solution? Thanks.

Hi:

Can you post the hardware ID for the amd sata controller from your windows 10 installation?

If the PC's BIOS is set to AHCI, it will be listed under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers device manager category.

If it is set to RAID, it will be listed under a Storage Controllers device manager category.

Also let me know what setting your drive controller is on...AHCI or RAID.

Different drivers are required for either setting.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID.

https://www.howtogeek.com/193798/how-to-find-drivers-for-unknown-devices-in-the-device-manager/

Once I have that info, I will see if XP SATA drivers even exist for that new of an AMD chipset.

Mmmmh....in Device manager i read "Controller AHCI SATA standard" (under the voice "controller Ide Ata/Atapi"), i dont know if its this that you were asking....

Under "storage controllers" i domt read any Raid...

I suppose if i checked correctly it is an Ahci

HP Recommended

Yes, that is partially what I need.

Now I need you to post the hardware ID for the Controller AHCI SATA standard device.

Use the link I posted above for how to find that.

Written instructions to find it...

Click on the Controller AHCI SATA standard device

Then click on the Details tab at the top of the Controller AHCI SATA standard device window.

Now you will see a Property drop down list, and it will be set to Device Description.

Drop down on that list and select the 3rd item (Hardware ID's).

Post the top string of characters that begin with PCI\VEN

I've opened "id hardware" and i read this (IN THIS ORDER):

PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_7801&SUBSYS_2B52103C&REV_40

PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_7801&SUBSYS_2B52103C

PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_7801&CC_010601

PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_7801&CC_0106

OK...

I have zipped up and attached the XP 32 bit SATA AHCI drivers you need to slipstream using nLite, or put on a USB Floppy Disk drive.

A USB flash drive absolutely will not work to install the drivers...slipstream or USB FDD are your only options.

Here is a partial copy and paste of the driver setup information file which shows the driver support for the following AHCI controller hardware ID's.

Oh, ok, thanks! But how should i use this zip file and all the written driver setup information?

And then, what slipstream and usb fdd are? ....Shouldnt the FDD USB need a usb pen anyway?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

Use the guide I attached below for how to slipstream the drivers.  It was written for Intel drivers, but the only difference is the driver file.  The steps should be the same.

To slipstream, just unzip the driver file into its folder and slipstream the driver folder.

To install via USB FDD, you have to copy and paste the file contents in the folder to a floppy disk drive.

Boot from the XP installation disk.  Press the F6 key when you see the message Press F6 if you need to install a SATA/RAID driver.

XP will continue to load files, then stop.  You will be asked to press the 's' key to load the sata drivers, which you should now see on your USB FDD.

Use the Up/Down arrow key to scroll to and select the AMD SATA Controller.

Then XP should install.  Leave the USB FDD connected for the entire installation, as XP will access the FDD a couple of times.

A USB Floppy disk drive just plugs into a USB2 port.  It is not a flash drive.

When working with old technology, you need to have the proper tools to do the job.

XP was not written to install drivers from a USB flash drive, because those were pretty new technology back in 2001.

Floppy disks were mainstream and included on almost every PC back then.

So, if you don't have a USB FDD, then you will have to slipstream the driver folder.

HP Recommended

Yeah, i know floppys back in the day, i never imagined that would become useful.

Unfortunately i dont have any floppy disk drive, so i will try this slipstream, hoping will be fine.

Thanks a lot! I will let you know if will work fine.

Just a question. I know that xp/10 could give some problem (after xp will be installed) when i try to boot back windows 10. And people talk about EasyBCD for dualbooting. I should prepare this operation before installing xP, or i can do it easily after that?

HP Recommended

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

I assume you have already disabled secure boot and enabled legacy mode in the BIOS, correct?

Then from there, I don't know what you need to do because I have never dual booted operating systems before.

It was my understanding that in Windows, you can select a boot delay in seconds to select the operating system you want to boot from.
