HP ENVY Notebook m7-u109dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

windows did an update and restart. When I checked afterward, everything I had on the desktop was gone. My photo folder was empty. I am unable to access my files. I have seen some of them, but the Windows button doesn't work, the search feature doesn't work. I created Recovery disks (1&2) when I first got the computer (8 years ago). I have run the first one and now the command prompt window is open.

x:\windows\system32>

I don't know what to enter here.

Help!

See if you can boot into windows safe mode and find a restore point.  If an install from your back failed there may not be any restore points but try anyway.

You need to determine if the disk is bad or if it is simply corrupted and needs a startup repair.

Turn the power on and tap the ESC key to get into the diagnostics menu. Press F2 to run the UEFI diagnostics. Can you pass the memory and disk test? Do not allow any updates or repairs if disk or memory fail, especially a BIOS update.

If you can pass the memory and disk test then you need to boot into safe mode.

. First read this article about safe mode.
Skip down to 'Enter safe mode from outside windows'. If f11 does not get you into system recovery then try turning the power on and off three or more times in a row.
When you get to advanced options select 'Startup Repair'

If the startup repair fails then try the restore point.

This video describes how to use a restore point.
Let me know if you need more help or if startup repair fails.
