A quick fix for missing visual C runtime is here
https://www.techpowerup.com/download/visual-c-redistributable-runtime-package-all-in-one/
It can be messy to install. Download the ZIP and unzip the files into a folder such as
c:\swsetup\vcruntime
Then run the "install_all.bat" from inside a command prompt
If a problem downloading updates, usually there is a Microsoft error code that is displayed. Make a note of the value and google for it. Generally if a download is corrupted it is possible that windows will not bother downloading it subsequently. This be fixed by searching for the name of the download (usually KBxxx) and doing a download using a browser.
If a problem with Edge downloads then use chrome or firefox .
