Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have 100 percent disk usage. I am very surprised by this because I have a solid state hard drive. Is this common to have 100 percent disk usage with a solid state hard drive? I tried to follow all these suggestions. I am using a HP Pavilion 590-p0097cb.

@COKEDUDE, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

100% disk usage on a system with an SSD is not normal and can lead to performance issues. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this on your HP Pavilion 590-p0097cb.

Disable Windows Search

Sometimes Windows Search can cause high disk usage.

  • Press Win + X → select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  • Type:net.exe stop "Windows Search"
  • If this helps, you can disable it permanently:
    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Find Windows Search, right-click → Properties → set Startup type to Disabled.

Disable Superfetch (SysMain)

Superfetch can cause issues on SSDs.

  • In services.msc, find SysMain, right-click → Properties → set Startup type to Disabled.

Check for Malware or Background Apps

Use Windows Security or a trusted antivirus to scan your system. Also, check Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) for any apps consuming high disk.

Update Storage Drivers

Outdated drivers can cause disk spikes.

  • Go to Device Manager → expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
  • Right-click each item → Update driverSearch automatically.

You can also use HP Support Assistant to check for driver updates. HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

Turn Off Tips and Notifications

  • Go to SettingsSystemNotifications & actions.
  • Turn off Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows.

Check Virtual Memory Settings

  • Go to System PropertiesAdvancedPerformance SettingsAdvancedVirtual Memory.
  • Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size, set a custom size:
    • Initial size: 4096 MB
    • Maximum size: 8192 MB

Run CHKDSK and SFC

  • Open PowerShell (Admin) and run:chkdsk C: /f /r sfc /scannow

HP Diagnostic Tools

Run HP’s built-in diagnostics to check SSD health:

  • Restart your PC and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run Storage Test

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
