Hello, my desktop which at its base was HP Pavillion 500-440ng has a bios 2018 update on the website, my current version is bios 2014 which is ancient I have zero options in the bios to do anything, I want to do this update that's listed as compatbile and available for my specific device on the website, but when i actually open the installer, it says it's not compatible with my device.. appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hi @jovv,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like a frustrating situation, especially if the update is listed as compatible on the website but isn’t applying.
Here are a few steps that might help resolve this issue:
1. Check Compatibility and Download Correct File Software and Drivers for HP Pavilion Desktop - 500-440ng
- Ensure the BIOS update file is specifically for the HP Pavilion 500-440ng and verify your desktop's exact model number on the back or bottom, as it might have a slight variation that requires a different BIOS file.
- Confirm that you downloaded the BIOS update directly from the official HP Support page. Sometimes, similar models have different BIOS versions.
2. Run Installer as Administrator
- Try right-clicking the BIOS update file and selecting "Run as administrator". Sometimes permissions issues can prevent the installer from recognizing compatibility.
3. Compatibility Mode
- If the update still doesn’t run, try setting compatibility mode. Right-click the installer, go to Properties > Compatibility, check Run this program in compatibility mode, and select Windows 7 or Windows 8 (whichever matches your current OS). Then, try running the installer again.
4. BIOS Update through USB
- If the above methods don’t work, you may need to use an alternative method to update the BIOS through a USB drive.
- Format a USB drive to FAT32, place the BIOS update file on it, and then reboot your PC.
- Press F10 to enter BIOS setup, look for a BIOS update/flash option, and select the update from the USB.
5. HP Support Assistance HP Support Assistant
- If none of these steps work, HP Support may have insights into why the update isn't recognized or any other workaround specific to this model.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
