Can't view Word documents in Windows 10

I have recently changed from my old HP Windows 7 computer to a new HP Windows 10 computer.  I can see my transferred Word documents files in my documents, but when I click on a file a dialogue box comes up asking me do I want Microsoft Office, asking me to try, buy, etc, and when I don't click on Buy, etc, the box disappears and so does the Word file I want to view. How can I view my own files, or am I being held to ransom by Microsoft and have to buy Microsoft Word.  Can you please help a totally confused pensioner?

Hello @Fabian 

Office isn't free and sounds like you were accessing a trial version that Microsoft (MS) offers. You have to install MS Office on a new system in order to use it, or purchase the version that is currently a trial version. I don't recommend purchasing the trial version.

What version of Microsoft Office were you using on the old computer?

If it was one that is transferable, I assume you didn't do that, correct?
