Microsoft Windows 11

I need to review a memory.dmp file but windows 11 will not let me open it, saying I do not have permissions. I try to change the permissions (I am an admin, right?) but still will not work. I tried changing permissions at the folder level (c:\Windows). Still nothing. What gives?

hi

unless I'm mistaken, it should not be opened directly, like this
don't play with windows permissions, if you don't know what you are doing..
you risk security problems, see malfunction if you make mistakes
see this

Dump files are not designed to be understandable by the average users. Memory dump files are designed for technicians and developers who can make use of the data to fix the issues and improve the system so that these crashes don’t happen again.

If you want to read the dump file in Windows 11, you will need a debugging tool specializes in reading dump files. You can use an app called WinDbg Preview by Microsoft which can be installed via Microsoft Store.

I understand most users should not mess with this. However, I did buy it to own it and use it how I wish and not share it with HP.

I have never had this problem with my other computers I have owned for the last 30 years. And troubleshooting is quicker when done by me than by the non-human HP spport.

Sigh.

Permissions issues have nothing to do with HP.
Microsoft is the problem!
the fact is that since windows 10, I do not know for windows 8 because a horror that I could not keep, it has become very complicated to have access to certain files / folders ..
It was much simpler before, that's clear, but I just advise you not to tempt fate, after that it's up to you!
I managed more by luck and trial and error to be able to access locked files, it is sometimes possible, but frankly I do not recommend, sometimes you have to do several manipulations and you can get lost in it!
