Envy Desktop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I got a new Envy Desktop computer with an HP keyboard. The function keys require pressing the Fn key.

I would prefer to have the default so I don't have to press the Fn key to use any of the function keys, which I use frequently.

Please note this an a desktop computer. The BIOS does not have an option under the Advanced menu for Device Configuration so I can't switch the Fn Key off. I chatted with HP Tech Support and they said I have to get help from Smart Friend to change the Registry. I don't think that is a good answer.

@softwaretailor,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. Press and hold the Power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the f10 key repeatedly to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

  3. Press the right or left arrow key to select the System Configuration menu.

  4. Press the up or down arrow key to select Action Keys Mode.

  5. Press the Enter key to display the Enabled / Disabled options.

    BIOS setup window with the System Configuration option and Action Keys Mode selected

  6. Press the up or down arrow key to select one of the options.

    • Enabled: Does not require pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

      For example, pressing f8 lowers the sound as printed on the key. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f8 minimizes and maximizes a web browser.

    • Disabled: Requires pressing fn to use the actions printed on the function keys.

      For example, pressing f1 opens a help window. Alternately, pressing both the fn + f1 keys puts the computer to sleep as printed on the key.

  7. Press the f10 key to save the selection and restart the computer.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hi The_Fossette,

Thank you for your reply. Thank you for taking the time to try to help me.

Unfortunately, your well-explained solution does not work for me.

My BIOS does not have a System Configuration menu. There is no Action Keys Mode option on any of my menus.

There is an Advanced menu. It has a Device Options option. It has a Num Lock State option. But no Action Keys Mode option.

Also, (a bit unrelated), the F1 key on my HP Lifestyle wired keyboard turns on/off the speaker.

Hi again,

My computer shows the HP Setup Utility, not simply Setup Utility.

The HP Setup Utility can be seen at https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07110.

@softwaretailor,

If the option is not available in the BIOS then there is no other way to disable the FN function.

Cheers!
