so i this hid error thats been present on my pc for like 6 months now. in these 6 months this Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - 51E8  HID device driver has worked for like only 2 or 3 times. most of the days the laptop has nt been opened because i know that the device wont work but like 2 or 3 times it did. when it did i tried to make a restore point but no the laptop is not allowing me to create one it says some error encountered even though no error came but still i was not able to create one. the error the last time the device stopped working was

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware.

Please contact the system manufacturer for further assistance.

error it was simply the device was not able to start but now this firmware one was there. like a last resort now i did a full system reset with cloud download as a option. i thought that this might solve the problem because like reset will remove the corrupted window files and download the new ones but alas noope still the same error is there. I know that one would think that hardware issue might be there but i think that laptop is not like fallen or something. yeah it did like slide many a times on my pillows or get a small fall like thing but its mostly on a soft surface so i mostly think the hardware is quite ok. and most the 2 or 3 times it did work means that hardware issue was not the problem at the time. so what should i do. earlier the main culprit i thought was the windows update itself but i dont know now. any leads are helpful. Thanks

i had done all the power management things as well as other known things like disabling and uninstalling the driver and the updates itself but no results so far

i am afraid that the ones i go to the store itself they would say motherboard needs to be replaced but i dont think so i would do that

Hi @Abhisheksood549,

Thank you for confirming the results of the component test. Since the keyboard passed except for the one non‑responsive key, and the mousepad failed while external devices are working fine, this points to a hardware issue with the built‑in touchpad.

The next step would be to have your device physically inspected by an authorized HP service center.  To ensure your device receives the appropriate care, we recommend visiting an authorized HP service center. Our certified technicians can provide a thorough diagnosis and offer the best solutions to address the issue.

Hi  @Abhisheksood549,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I  understand how  it must be to deal with this HID error for so long, especially after trying resets and updates without success. Thank you for sharing all the details it really helps me understand what you’ve already tried.

Could you kindly confirm the exact HP laptop model you’re using?

A few points so I can narrow this down:

  • When the error occurs, is it always tied to the Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - 51E8 device in Device Manager?
  • Do you notice if the touchpad, touchscreen, or any HID-related input devices stop working when this error shows up?
  • After the reset, did Windows automatically install the driver, or did you manually install it from HP Support/Intel’s website?

Here are some few  steps I’d suggest trying for now:

  1. BIOS Update: Visit HP’s support website for your laptop model and check if a newer BIOS version is available. Outdated firmware can cause HID descriptor errors.
  2. Chipset & Serial IO Driver: Download and install the latest chipset and Intel Serial IO drivers directly from HP’s support page for your model (not just Windows Update).
  3. Device Manager Cleanup: In Device Manager, uninstall the problematic HID device, then restart the laptop. Let Windows reinstall it automatically.
  4. Hardware Diagnostics: Run HP’s built-in hardware diagnostics (press F2 at startup) to check if the I2C controller hardware passes the test.
  5. Windows Updates: Ensure optional updates (especially driver updates) are installed via Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.

If the issue persists even after BIOS and driver updates, it could point to a  hardware-level fault with the I2C controller. But before jumping to conclusions like motherboard replacement, I’d like to confirm on diagnostics first.

I hope this helps.

Yes its always the Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - 51E8  and my touchepad and a few keyboard keys doesnt work either. the key s do eventually work after i long press the required one but nothing on touchpad its dead as it and after reset it automatically downloaded everything i didnt download anything manually.
and more recently i discovered this was coming in device manager

Abhisheksood549_0-1782544684633.png

the is connected is true
the is present is true

and the has problem is also true
does this mean the chip is not able to get power or something like that that would mean something on motherboard is wrong and i have also i have 25h2 os for this currently no drivers are there on the support website but i have done the uninstalling and reinstallation for the previous version but nothing to achieve. So like what can i do....

and the power data/state is currently D3
i did came across this support page Solved: ELAN EzTouchFilter / HID I2C Touchscreen Issue - HP Support Community - 7165433  where the problem was a loose cable could i be my case as i did remember of opening of the laptop for cleaning but the odds of have a loose cable after fitting is less as we were cautious in doing so but now i think maybe its the cable idk maybe i should go to the service center after all

Hi @Abhisheksood549,

Thanks for your response, Before we move forward, could you confirm if you’ve already performed Step 4: the HP Hardware UEFI test for the keyboard and touchpad? This diagnostic helps us determine whether the problem is hardware-related or driver/software-related.

Here’s how you can run the HP Hardware UEFI test:

Turn off your computer.

Power it back on and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly (about once per second).

When the Startup Menu appears, press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

In the menu, select Component Tests.

Choose Input Devices.

Run the Keyboard Test: It will ask you to press certain keys to check functionality.

Run the Mouse/Touchpad Test: It will check if the touchpad responds to movement and clicks.

Follow the on-screen instructions and note any error codes or failures reported.

If the test reports a hardware failure, it usually means the issue is with the physical components (keyboard/touchpad or motherboard connection). If the test passes, then the problem is more likely driver or OS-related.
