When I click HP Support Assistant it says Application enabling services currently unavailable.  I followed the instructions right up to trying to download and install the latest version from the HP Support Assistant website but had no luck, it wouldn't download.  I'm very concerned as it also said on my HP Support System if the steps do not resolve the issue, my application could be corrupted.  Any help would be so appreciated.

Hi @Willow1949,

Thank you for your response. It sounds like you're facing an issue where HP Support Assistant (HPSA) is not functioning properly, and the icon on your taskbar is causing confusion with an error message. Based on your description, I believe there are a couple of potential causes for the problem, and here are some steps you can follow to resolve it:

1. Check If HP Support Assistant is Already Installed

The "blue question mark" icon usually indicates that HP Support Assistant is installed, but it might not be working properly. If you click on it and it shows a message like "You'll need an app to open this link," it could be that the app itself is corrupted or not opening correctly.

Check via Control Panel:

  • Open the Control Panel (you can search for it in the Start menu).
  • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
  • Look for HP Support Assistant in the list of installed programs.
  • If it’s there, try right-clicking it and selecting "Repair" if the option is available.

2. Reinstall HP Support Assistant

Since HP Support Assistant is no longer available directly from the Microsoft Store, you can download it from HP’s official website.

Here’s how to proceed:

  • Go to the HP Support Assistant Download page.
  • Download the installer for HP Support Assistant.
  • Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the instructions to install or reinstall the software.

Note: If you previously had HP Support Assistant installed but it became corrupted, this fresh installation should resolve any issues.

3. Remove Existing Icon (If App is Corrupted)

If the blue question mark icon keeps showing up and clicking it does nothing, it’s possible that the app has become corrupted. You can try the following:

  • Unpin the Icon:
    • Right-click the blue question mark icon on the taskbar and choose Unpin from taskbar (this just removes the shortcut; it doesn't uninstall the app itself).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Willow1949

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve this issue:

1. Restart Your PC and Check for Pending Updates

Before diving into troubleshooting, make sure your system is up-to-date, as sometimes issues with applications like HPSA can be caused by missing Windows updates or software updates.

  • Restart your computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix issues with applications.
  • Check for Windows Updates: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for updates to ensure your system is fully updated.

2. Check and Restart HP Support Services

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type services.msc and hit Enter to open the Services window.
  3. Look for the following services and ensure they are running:
    • HP Support Assistant Service
    • HP Service Framework
  4. If any of these services are not running, right-click on them and select Start. If they are running but still not working, right-click and select Restart.
  5. After restarting the services, try opening HP Support Assistant again.

3. Reinstall HP Support Assistant

Uninstall HP Support Assistant:

  • Press Win + X and select Apps and Features.
  • Scroll down to find HP Support Assistant and click on it, then select Uninstall.

Download the Latest Version of HPSA:

  • Go to the official HP website to download the latest version of HP Support Assistant: HP Support Assistant Download Page
  • Choose your country and language, and enter your product information (or simply choose Download HP Support Assistant from the main page).
  • If the download page is not working properly, try using a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) or disabling your browser’s security features temporarily (like an overactive ad blocker).

Install the Downloaded Version:

  • Once the installer has been downloaded, run the setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to install HP Support Assistant again.
  • Restart your computer after the installation.

4. Manually Install HP Support Assistant Components

  1. Download HP Service Framework: HP Support Assistant depends on HP Service Framework (HSF) to function properly. If this is corrupted or missing, it could cause issues with HPSA.
  2. Install the HP SoftPaq Download Manager: Sometimes, HPSA might require HP SoftPaq Download Manager to function correctly. You can try downloading and installing it from HP's website to ensure all the components are installed.

5. Check for System Corruption Using SFC and DISM

If nothing else works, it’s possible that some system files related to HP Support Assistant have become corrupted. You can use System File Checker (SFC) and DISM to scan and repair your system:

Run System File Checker (SFC):

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Press Win + X, then select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type the following command and press Enter:
  • sfc /scannow
  • Let the scan complete and follow any on-screen instructions to fix errors.

Run DISM:

  • After SFC finishes, run the DISM (Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool) tool to repair the system image.
  • In the same Command Prompt (Admin) window, type:
  • dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  • This process may take some time. Once it's complete, restart your computer and check if HP Support Assistant is functioning.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

WOW, RaJ2111, thanks so much for the very thorough reply about my HP Support Assistant problem, to say I'm blown away by your reply is to put it mildly.  I printed your reply and will follow your instructions today.  I forgot to mention what happened is when I had this problem a couple days ago, I went into my Apps and uninstalled HP Support Assistant, my bad 🙄 I'll let you know how I make out.

Hi again Raj2111.  First I checked for updates and my computer is up-to-date.  Then I got into the Services window, no problems thanks to your very clear instructions.  In the Service Window there's nothing listed for HP Support Assistant and nothing listed for HP Service Framework.  There IS a listing for HP Network HSA Service and HP One Agent Service both showing Status Running and showing Startup Type Automatic.

I'm thinking the problem is because I carelessly uninstalled the HP Support Assistant from my Apps a couple days ago.

So now I'm not sure what to do?

Thanks again, Raj2111.  Re: your provided link to download HP Support Assistant ~ I've tried this a a few times over the past couple days using the link page you provided.  What happens is it goes into my File Explorer page where I have all my downloads, documents, pictures, etc.  In the Folders File Name at the bottom of my File Explorer page I type HP Support Assistant and below this under Save As Type it already shows Application.

Then a notice pops up saying, "You don't have permission to save in this location.  Contact the administrator to obtain permission.  Would you like to save in the (it shows the first 5 letters of my first name) Folder instead?"

I don't know how to access the first 5 letters of my name folder.  Would I click New Folder at the top of my File Explorer page?  I think we're getting there, Raj2111 🤞

Hi @Willow1949

Welcome to the HP support community.

It looks like you're encountering a permissions issue while trying to download HP Support Assistant on your PC. This can happen when your user account doesn't have the necessary permissions to save files in certain directories. Let's break down how to handle this issue step by step:

Step 1: Understanding the Permissions Error

  • When you see the error "You don't have permission to save in this location", it means that your account might not have the required permissions to save the file to the default location (usually C:\Users\YourName\Downloads).
  • The prompt is suggesting that you save the file to a different folder (it suggests a folder with the first few letters of your name), but you're unsure how to access that folder.

Step 2: Saving the File in Your User Folder

  • Instead of saving it in the default location, the system suggests saving it in your user folder. This is often your Documents or Downloads folder, which should already have the necessary permissions for you to save files.
  • To proceed with this:
    1. Click "Yes" when it asks if you'd like to save it in the folder named after the first few letters of your name.
    2. Locate the folder in File Explorer (for example, it might be something like C:\Users\YourName).
    3. Once inside, find the Downloads folder or the folder that matches your name, and save the file there.

Step 3: Creating a New Folder (If Needed)

  • If you want to create a new folder in the location where you're saving the file (like in your Documents or Downloads folder), here's how:
    1. Go to your Downloads folder (or another location within your user folder).
    2. Right-click anywhere in the blank space within the folder.
    3. Select New > Folder.
    4. Name the folder something like HP Support Assistant, then click Enter.
    5. Now, try saving the file in that newly created folder.

Step 4: Running as Administrator (Optional)

If you continue facing issues, you might need to try running File Explorer as an administrator to bypass any permission restrictions:

  1. Right-click the File Explorer icon in the taskbar or start menu.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Navigate to the location where you want to save the file and try the download again.

Step 5: Checking User Account Permissions (Advanced)

  • If the issue persists, you might need to adjust your account permissions to ensure that your account has full access to the folder you're trying to save in.
    1. Right-click the Downloads folder (or whichever folder you're trying to save to).
    2. Select Properties > Security.
    3. Under Group or user names, select your user account.
    4. Click Edit and make sure the box for Full Control is checked.
    5. Click Apply and then OK to confirm.

This step should only be necessary if you're still unable to save the file after following the steps above.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Raj2111, I completed all the steps you provided me with right up to step 4 so I got HP Support Assistant labelled in my downloads folder.  But it's showing as an empty folder.  Do you think I should proceed to your step 4 re: running as Administrator?

Willow here again 🙄  Raj2111, when I right click the ?HP Support Assistant icon on my taskbar, a notice appears that says You'll need an app to open this HP Support Assistant.  Look for an app in the Microsoft Store.

I think I did look for an app a couple days ago in the Microsoft Store for HP Support Assistant but I couldn't find one.  So I'll check again.
