I have a new (set up two days ago) HP Envy Desktop. I am getting a yellow dot at the HP Support Assistant indicating I have an update download : "HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 8985)" The reason I have this nice new desktop is because I had a similar HP download update for BIOS on my previous computer (only two years old but out of warranty) and after downloading it it said to restart the computer and after clicking the button my computer never started up again. I spent a week trying every suggestion on the internet and it was dead. So I have great concern in doing this again without getting advice from those that know a lot more than I know. I've searched and read several similar topics but did not find an exact match or info. In a nut shell how important or needed is this update and what are the chances of having issues after I do the download? The windows updates were automatic and flawless with not much hands on by me but this from the HP Support Assistant seems different.

you can still manually do a bios update by visiting the HP page for your model computer if you don't want to do a auto update
regardless, you should disable your antivirus if doing a bios update within windows, then re enable after updating the bios
go to HP, download the latest bios spXXXX FILE, extract THEN READ THE INCLUDED DIRECTIONS note that this model has several DIFFRENT BIOS FILES each are system specific, due to this i recommend you allow the HP support app to do the update as it will auto select the correct bios file
NOTE THAT hp ALSO POSTS THE LATEST CHANGES ONLINE FOR THE LISTED BIOS, i recommend reading this and then deciding if you do need/want to update

DGroves,
thank you for your response and answers I do appreciate it. From reading your response/answer it sounds like this is legit, a regular thing, best to do via HP Support Assist and after disabling all of my antivirus programs.
I am on my way out of the house but will do this later today and reply.

I just returned home and was determined to go ahead and allow the HP Support Assistant do the suggested download of BIOS. I opened up (clicked on the question mark) to begin and the download was no longer there and the yellow indicator dot on the question mark was also gone. DGroves you do amazing work, just kidding but I do appreciate your response and help. My issue is now resolved it looks like.
