Hi @Sia6

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it is to see a Hard Disk 3F0 error and then find that your bootable USB or SSD is not detected when trying to install Windows. You’ve already taken the right step by checking installation media, and I’ll guide you through the areas that most often cause this situation.

Why the 3F0 error appears

This error means the system cannot find a valid boot device. It usually happens if:

  • The hard drive or SSD is not properly connected or has failed.
  • The boot order in BIOS does not point to the correct device.
  • The bootable USB is not recognized because of formatting or port issues.

Step‑by‑step actions

1. Check BIOS boot order

  • Power on the laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Go to System Configuration > Boot Options.
  • Confirm that your SSD or hard drive is listed.
  • If you are installing Windows, ensure USB Hard Drive is enabled and placed first in the boot order.
  • Save changes and exit.

2. Run hardware diagnostics

  • Restart and press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Storage Test to check the health of the hard drive/SSD.
  • If the test fails, the drive may need replacement.

3. Verify bootable USB

  • Ensure the USB is created with the correct tool (for example, Microsoft Media Creation Tool).
  • It must be formatted as FAT32 for UEFI systems.
  • Try a different USB port, preferably a direct port on the laptop rather than through a hub.

4. Reseat the SSD/HDD

  • If comfortable, power off the laptop, remove the battery and AC adapter, and carefully reseat the SSD or HDD.
  • This ensures the drive is firmly connected to the system board.

5. Update BIOS

  • Visit the official HP support page for your model:
    HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Download and install the latest BIOS update.
  • BIOS updates often improve device detection and boot compatibility.

If the drive is not detected

  • If diagnostics confirm the drive is not recognized, replacement may be required.
  • If the USB is not detected, recreate the installation media using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool and test again.

You’ve already been very patient in working through this. The most effective immediate actions are checking BIOS boot order and running the hardware diagnostics.
