@Cam453, Hi there, and welcome to HP Support Community!
Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.
If you're having trouble locating the CPU (Central Processing Unit) in your HP Desktop, here’s a quick guide to help you understand where it is and how to identify it:
\What is the CPU and Where Is It Located?
The CPU is the main processor of your computer, responsible for executing instructions and running programs. In a desktop PC, the CPU is installed on the motherboard, typically underneath a cooling fan or heatsink.
Steps to Locate the CPU Physically:
Important: Before opening your desktop, make sure the PC is powered off and unplugged from the wall outlet.
- Open the side panel of your HP desktop case. This usually involves removing screws at the back and sliding the panel off.
- Look for the large fan or heatsink mounted on the motherboard. The CPU is directly underneath this.
- If you want to see the CPU itself, you’ll need to carefully remove the heatsink/fan assembly. However, this is not recommended unless you're experienced with PC hardware, as it may require reapplying thermal paste.
How to Check CPU Details Without Opening the Case:
If you're just trying to find out what CPU your desktop has, you can do this easily in Windows:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Click the Performance tab.
- Select CPU from the left panel.
- You’ll see the CPU model and speed listed at the top right.
