I have a friend who has an older HP Pavilion 500-314 desktop PC that I would like to upgrade to the latest bios.

Can you tell me what the latest version is and where I can download a copy?

Since your looking to update the BIOS kindly find the below and steps : 

 

LInk : https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/laptops

 

  1. Download: Go to the HP Software and Driver link above page and enter your product serial number and windows version  (To find the Windows version on your HP computer, the quickest way is pressing Windows key +R ,  type : winver ) details to find your specific model's support page, then download the latest BIOS update.
  2. Prepare: Save the file and ensure your laptop is plugged in and has sufficient battery charge, and disable any antivirus temporarily.
  3. Install: Double-click the downloaded file to run the installer, follow the prompts, and select "Update" when asked to install it automatically.
  4. Restart: Click "Restart now" when prompted; the computer will reboot into the BIOS update utility and install the update. Do not turn it off.

Thank you for your reply but unfortunately it doesn't help me.

I have used the serial, product, and model numbers to search for the appropriate driver but the search tool doesn'r recognize the numbers as valid.

I cannot leave a private message for some reason. The blue envelope does not appear next to my community profile and when I click on the provided link, I get the following message:
