Hi there, i’ve had an Omen 15 for a few years now and it hasn’t been used in the last year or two the last time i used it, it was turning on okay i’ve recently bought a new charger for it because i couldn’t find the old one and it seems to be doing something as the white light is coming on when the charger is plugged in but the laptop doesn’t seem to be turning on even when i hold the power button in for a while but it can’t be a problem with the charger, is it possible the battery is just done because it’s been sitting around for so long?

@Shandog_2000, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're on the right track with the possibility that the battery has drained or degraded after sitting idle for a while. However, there are a few troubleshooting steps to take to make sure we isolate the issue.

Here’s a detailed guide to troubleshoot your laptop:

1. Check the Power Adapter

  • Confirm Charger Compatibility: Double-check that the new charger you bought is the correct one for your laptop (correct voltage and amperage). Sometimes, a charger can appear to work, but it might not be providing the right power to boot up the laptop.
  • Try a Different Outlet: Ensure the power outlet is working by testing with other devices.
  • Check for LED Lights on Charger: Some power adapters have LED indicators that show if power is flowing. If it doesn’t light up, there might be an issue with the adapter.

2. Battery Health Check

  • Remove the Battery (if possible): If your Omen 15 has a removable battery, try taking it out and plugging the laptop directly into the charger. Sometimes, if the battery is faulty, it can prevent the laptop from turning on even when plugged in. If the laptop turns on with the battery removed, the battery is likely dead.
  • If Non-Removable Battery: If the battery is non-removable, you’ll need to test the laptop without the battery by simply plugging it in and powering it on. If you don’t see any response from the laptop, then the issue might be with either the charger, motherboard, or the battery itself.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Remove Power Source (AC Adapter & Battery).
  • Hold the Power Button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power in the system.
  • Reconnect the Charger (or the battery, if removable).
  • Press the Power Button Again and check if it turns on. Sometimes, a hard reset can help clear up any power-related issues.

4. Check for Display Issues

  • Screen Test: Sometimes, the laptop might be turning on but the display isn't showing anything. Try to listen closely for sounds like fans or hard drive spinning or check for any lights on the keyboard. If you hear something but see nothing on the screen, it’s likely a display issue.
  • Connect to an External Monitor: If you have access to an external monitor, plug your laptop into it. If the laptop turns on and displays on the external screen, your laptop’s built-in display might be faulty.

5. Perform a Power Drain / CMOS Reset

  • Disconnect All Peripherals (USB devices, SD cards, external drives).
  • Remove the Battery (if possible) and unplug the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30-60 seconds to drain any residual power in the laptop.
  • Reconnect the Charger and try powering it on again.

6. Listen for Diagnostic Sounds

  • Beep Codes: Some laptops give specific beep codes to indicate issues. If your laptop starts to make a series of beeps, note how many and their pattern (e.g., two short beeps). You can look up these codes in your laptop's user manual or online to understand what they mean.

7. Test the Power Button

  • The power button itself may be malfunctioning. If you’re hearing no response from the power button, there may be an issue with the button mechanism. Try gently pressing it multiple times or even try pressing it with a different object to make sure it’s registering.

8. Check the Charging Port and Motherboard

  • Inspect the Charging Port: Check the laptop's charging port for any visible damage or debris. A damaged charging port might cause the laptop to not charge properly.
  • Motherboard Issues: If none of the above works, the problem could be with the motherboard itself. This is a bit more complex to diagnose without professional tools, so if all else fails, you may want to take it to a technician.

9. Check for LED Lights or Error Codes

  • Sometimes, the laptop might give an indication of what's wrong using LED patterns. For example, a flashing LED might indicate a problem with the battery or motherboard.
  • Refer to your laptop's manual or Omen's website for error light codes if you see any.

10. Try Booting Into BIOS/UEFI

  • If you see the laptop turn on and the fans spin but nothing appears on the screen, try pressing the ESC or F2 key immediately after pressing the power button. This should bring you into the BIOS or UEFI menu. If you can access this, the issue might be with Windows or the operating system.
  • If BIOS is accessible: Check battery status or power settings there to see if it’s detected and functioning correctly.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue
