It might be possible that you either changed default photo viewer (unknowingly) or have thumbnails turned off in the folder options.

Go to Start button, click on Control panel and then click Default Programs.

Set your default programs.

Select Windows Photo Viewer from the list and click on Set this Program as default.

Go to Start button, click on Control panel (All Control Panel items) and open Folder Options.

Go to the View tab and make sure Always show icons, never thumbnails in Unchecked.

Go to Control panel (All Control Panel items) again and open System.

On the left side, click on Advanced system settings.

Under the Advanced tab, select Performance Settings.

Under the Visual Effects tab, make sure Show thumbnails instead of icons is checked.

Let me know if this works out.
