My 😧 drive is suddenly filled with a lot of folders, with two-lettered names, and all of them contain .mo files. I have no idea what these files are for, or if it is safe to delete them. The .mo files also say they were modified on a date that predates when I had my laptop by many years

MO is an acronym for Machine Object. Files that contain the .mo file extension most commonly hold binary data files. These files store object data that is referenced by an associated software application. The MO file format is commonly used to translate application code.
POT, .PO and .MO files are common in PHP programming, WordPress and other programs that require multiple language translations.
