Dear members,
As a Level 1 community member (is that the highest or the lowest rank? 😀) I can't seem to execute an executable. I need to be able to do that, in order to update the BIOS of my t530.
What I've tried:
- using FireFox to go to the HP Support website,
- finding my system and OS,
- downloading a BIOS update that is available
The download goes fine, then I am stuck. From the download dialog, I have no way of executing the executable! Click or doubleclick won't work. I don't seem to have a file manager installed, so I can't "Show in Folder" either, to try it from there.
How can I achieve this?
Kind regards,
Ferdinand.

hi
About Community Rank Levels, P...
so i see here
Operating System: Linux
maybe not this one , but see
1. Download the file by clicking the "Download" or "Obtain Software" button and saving the file to a folder on your storage device (make a note of the folder where the downloaded file is saved). 2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions (Windows only). 3. For systems with Linux installed, you can also use the BIOS flash utility provided and its associated driver to restore or upgrade the system BIOS within a Linux environment. Copy the BIOS update firmware to the desktop under the Linux environment, or the other directory. (Using Terminal with administrator privileges may be required) If you want to copy the firmware file from a USB storage device, it would usually mount under /tmp/tmpfs/mnt/your_USB_device. Navigate to the USB storage device and copy the firmware file to the desktop or the other directory. As all of the prerequisites are completed, execute the BIOS flash utility along with the firmware file. (For example: "hptc-bios-flash BIOS.bin" for ThinPro/SmartZero Core or "ami-flash BIOS.bin" for other distros) Please do not turn off the system or remove power during the flash process or the warranty will be void.

Hi Prométhée,
Thanks for a quick reply. It seems you did not fully get the question, though. The instructions you refer to are clear but, as mentioned in my original post, I have no way of following these from point 2 and further. I can download a file, but in fact, I already fail halfway point 1: "(...) and saving the file to a folder (...).
I have no way to either determine the folder where the file is stored, access the folder, or start the executable. I simply have no program installed with which I can handle files and folders.
It should not be necessary if only I can start the executable from the Downloads-screen in FireFox.
Hoping for more tips,
Ferdinand.

hi
Sorry, I took what you said here, then I didn't quite understand what you meant.
"" From the download dialog, I have no way of executing the executable! Click or doubleclick won't work. ""
I'm not a linux user, so I don't know how it works with firefox
but me under windows, after the window of the file for download, it offers me to save the file
and there it is visible where it will be downloaded, but i had changed firefox options..
but when the file is uploaded top right
we see the file that has been downloaded
and here several options, the first, which should not be usable, from what I read, "open file"
and to the right of this window there is a folder, clicking on it opens the download folder
if you do not have these possibilities, then it will be necessary to see with a Linux user!

Don't worry Prométhée,
I appreciate your attempt at helping me. I should have emphasized perhaps, that I am using a thin client that has ThinPro, which is a Linux OS. I am used to work with Windows, just like you. That's why I was surprised this isn't equally simple in ThinPro.
Hope a ThinPro expert passes by...
Greetz,
Ferdinand.

Yes, sorry, I have never tried any system other than windows..
But therefore, you have not found this type of option under firefox?
One last thing, if I understood correctly, that you cannot find the download folder
In the firefox settings, do you have an option
files and apps
downloads
Save files to folder: choose
below a checkbox Always ask where to save files

In the meantime I've learned a bit more, and made a call with HP Support. I found out that executing something like this is quite difficult in ThinPro:
- you need to log in as administrator
- start an X-terminal window (the equivalent of a command window in Windows)
- go to the download folder
- set the file to be executable (chmod a+x <filename>)
- and then run the file ( ./<filename>)
Only to discover that the files I downloaded are Windows-files! That's when I decided to **bleep**. They have filed a case and will come back to me next week.
By the way, the support person advised me not to update my BIOS, as long as I don't have any problems. If you have any problems with your machine, they are rarely caused by an old BIOS, he said.
I myself, on the other hand, have the habit of updating my machine whenever possible. I haven't had any problems with previous computers (all Windows) when I updated anything, including the BIOS.
I will come back with more news once I hear from HP Support.
Have a nice weekend!
Ferdinand.

So we have one thing in common with this person, that's what I say almost all the time, no problem, we leave the computer alone!
We have a saying
I don't know if equivalent in English
"Prudence est mère de sureté" or " mieux vaut prévenir que guérir "
https://www.expressions-francaises.fr/prudence-est-mere-de-surete/
Thank you, have a nice weekend too @Ferdinand_NL
