Hi @Mju77

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When an HP desktop is running slow or freezing, it’s usually caused by one (or a mix) of the following:

Too many background programs

Low RAM or high memory usage

Hard drive issues (especially if it’s an older HDD)

Overheating

Malware or junk files

Pending Windows or driver updates

Here’s a step-by-step plan to troubleshoot and speed it up:

1. Check for High Resource Usage

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Look at the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns.

If Disk is near 100% constantly, the hard drive might be the bottleneck.

If Memory is maxed, you may need more RAM or to close background apps.

2. Remove Unnecessary Startup Programs

In Task Manager → Startup tab → disable programs you don’t need launching at startup (e.g., Zoom, Spotify, Teams if you don’t always use them).

3. Run a Malware & Junk File Cleanup

Use Windows Security (built-in) to scan for viruses.

Use Disk Cleanup or a trusted cleaner like CCleaner to remove temporary files.

4. Update Everything

Go to Settings → Windows Update → install all updates.

Open HP Support Assistant and check for driver/BIOS updates.

5. Check Your Storage

If you have an HDD, consider upgrading to an SSD — it’s the #1 speed boost for older desktops.

Check free space: if your C: drive has less than 15% free, performance will drop.

6. Prevent Overheating

Make sure vents are not blocked.

Clean dust from fans (compressed air works well).

7. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Restart your PC and press F2 repeatedly before Windows loads.

Run a system test to check RAM, CPU, and drive health.

Let me know your desktop model and OS version—I'll tailor the next steps or link you to the exact drivers and BIOS updates.
